Dear Members-

The Fiji Law Society Council has had several meetings to discuss the future of the Fiji law Society since the implication of the Legal Practitioners Decree 2009. The following is an update of what has been done recently:

1.       The Council has put together a FLS Plan for 2009 – 2010.  Attached is a copy of the plan. You are welcome to make your constructive comments on this. It is our aim to setup a framework by which the Fiji Law Society moves forward under the current circumstances.

2.       The Council has written to the Acting Chief Registrar addressing a member’s request on complaint made against some members who requested assistance. If other members wish to have assistance from the Fiji law Society you are welcome to write to us.

3.       The Council had written to the Commissioner Central requesting for a permit of the Special General Meeting to discuss the implication of the Legal Practitioners Decree. Permit was not granted.  Attached are copies of the letters in relation to this.

4.       The Council has written to The Law Society of New South Wales and Queensland Law Society asking for assistance and attaching the FLS plan for 2009 – 2010. We are getting a lot of support from law societies abroad.

5.       The Council has written to the Acting Chief Registrar on concerns raised by members who have been issued a temporary practicing certificate.  Attached is a copy of the letter.

6.       The Vice president and Secretary met and will continue to meet with potential donors to discuss possible funding for the FLS. The plan prepared by the FLS Council was shown to them.

7.       The Council has written to the Officer in Charge of Magistrate’s Court Ba addressing concerns on the matters set in Ba Magistrate’s Court between Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Attached is a copy of the letter.

8.       We welcome your comments.  If there are any other issues that you want the FLS to raise, please let us know.

Kind regards
